Segregated Funds

Segregated funds (or seg funds) are individual insurance contracts that invest in one or more underlying assets, such as a mutual fund.

However, unlike mutual funds, these are guaranteed to protect part of the money you invest (75% to 100% depending on how they are set up). This means that even if the underlying fund loses money, you are guaranteed to get back some or all of your principal investment. Though, this requires you to maintain your investment for a pre-determined length of time (e.g. 10 years) in order to benefit from this guarantee. You must also pay an additional fee for this insurance protection.

Bonds are also known as fixed-income securities and are one of the three main generic asset classes, along with stocks (equities) and cash equivalents. Many corporate and government bonds are publicly traded on exchanges, while others are traded only over-the-counter (OTC).

Also known as "shares" or "equity", there are two main types of stock: common and preferred. Common stock usually entitles the owner to vote at shareholders' meetings and to receive dividends. Preferred stock generally does not have voting rights, but has a higher claim on assets and earnings than the common shares. For example, owners of preferred stock receive dividends before common shareholders and have priority in the event that a company goes bankrupt and is liquidated.

Mutual Funds

These are made up of a pool of funds collected from many investors for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market instruments and similar assets. One of the advantages of mutual funds is that they give smaller investors access to professionally managed, diversified portfolios of equities, bonds and other securities - otherwise these would be quite difficult to create with a small amount of capital. As a shareholder, you participate proportionally in the gain or loss of the fund. Mutual fund units/shares are issued and can typically be purchased or redeemed as needed at the fund's current net asset value (NAV) per share, which can also be expressed as NAVPS.

Alternative Investments: Options, Futures, FOREX, Gold, Real Estate and more

Investments in this category tend to be high risk/high reward and we recommend that new investors focus instead on building a financial foundation before speculating.

Regardless of which type of investments you are interested in, we are happy to set up a meeting to discuss the various options and strategies to enhance your investment goals.
